How a Love Story Became a Venetian Footwear Brand

How a Love Story Became a Venetian Footwear Brand

Gondolina was not born from a traditional business plan.

It began with two people, two cultures and one shared belief: that the heritage of Italian craftsmanship could be protected by giving it a new and contemporary voice.

We are Agnese and Javier, the co-founders of Gondolina Shoes.

Our company grew from our relationship, our different perspectives and our shared connection to Venice.

What began as a personal idea gradually became an international footwear brand, a community and a much larger mission than either of us had first imagined.

This is the story of how two young founders turned a love for Italian craftsmanship into Gondolina.

An Idea Rooted in Venice

Venice is unlike any other city.

Its beauty is immediately recognisable, but its identity is made of much more than monuments.

It exists in its traditions, its artisans, its vocabulary, its colours and the countless small objects that have accompanied Venetian life for generations.

Among them were traditional Venetian slippers.

We saw in this familiar form something with enormous contemporary potential: a shoe that was comfortable, elegant and deeply connected to its territory, but that could be interpreted through a new design language.

We did not want to remove the shoe from its history.

We wanted to help that history evolve.

Building Gondolina Between Two Different Perspectives

Our differences became one of Gondolina’s greatest creative strengths.

Agnese brought a deeply personal relationship with Venice and northeastern Italy. Javier approached the same world with the curiosity of someone who had fallen in love with it from the outside.

One of us instinctively understood the references.

The other questioned them, reinterpreted them and helped make them accessible to an international audience.

Gondolina was born from that exchange.

The brand carries a Venetian identity, but it was always created to travel.

It was designed for people who love Italy, craftsmanship and beautiful objects, whether they live beside the lagoon or thousands of kilometres away.

Starting Before We Felt Ready

At the beginning, we did not have a large team, an established retail network or a perfect roadmap.

We had prototypes, ideas and the conviction that traditional craftsmanship could become the foundation of a modern brand.

Like many founders, we built Gondolina while balancing other responsibilities.

Days extended into nights. Weekends became working days. Every decision, from fabrics to packaging, content, sales and store design, required us to learn something new.

There were people who supported us from the very beginning.

There were also many who thought the idea was too specific, too ambitious or too difficult to scale.

The uncertainty was real.

But so was the belief that Gondolina could become something meaningful.

Turning a Traditional Shoe into a Recognisable Brand

From the beginning, our ambition was not simply to sell slippers.

We wanted to create an entire visual and emotional universe around them.

That universe would be built from Venice, but it would avoid the most obvious representations of the city.

Instead, we found inspiration in the lagoon at dusk, historical textiles, local celebrations, boatbuilding traditions, architectural details and the many layers of Venetian life.

Each shoe would have its own name and story.

Each Gondolina atelier would welcome people into the world behind the product.

Each collection would add another chapter to the evolving identity of the brand.

This approach helped transform a traditional form of footwear into something contemporary and immediately recognisable.

A Business Built Around a Personal Story

Founder stories matter because businesses are shaped by the people who create them.

Our personal relationship has influenced the way we make decisions, manage challenges and imagine the future of Gondolina.

It has required trust, honesty and the ability to continue believing in the same vision during moments of pressure and uncertainty.

Building a company together is not always romantic.

There are production deadlines, difficult decisions, unexpected problems and endless conversations that do not fit into an elegant founder narrative.

But beneath all of that, Gondolina remains an expression of something we built together.

It is a love story between two founders, but also between heritage and reinvention, Venice and the world, imagination and execution.

From Venice, With a Global Vision

Our dream has never been to turn Gondolina into something disconnected from its origins.

The ambition is the opposite: to bring its origins to a larger audience without diluting them.

We want people around the world to discover the quality of Italian artisan footwear and experience a different side of Venice, one expressed through materials, silhouettes, colours and stories.

The further Gondolina travels, the more important its roots become.

Because the most international brands are not necessarily those that abandon their identity.

They are often those that understand it most clearly.

Every Pair Continues the Story

Today, every person who chooses Gondolina becomes part of the story that began between the two of us.

A pair may be discovered during a first journey to Venice, selected for an important celebration or ordered from another part of the world.

Wherever it goes, it carries with it a small expression of the original idea behind the brand.

That Italian craftsmanship deserves to be protected.

That traditions can evolve without losing their soul.

And that sometimes, a company can begin with something as simple, and as powerful, as two people believing in the same dream.
